Abstract
The purpose of this study was to analyze the characteristics of the structural, functional and interactive dimensions of the social network of older people in rural areas and delineate sex segregated information on the statistically significant factors which influence their health. The results showed that rural elderly women had poorer health than men. The level of health varied according to the socio-demographic variables such as age, marital status, employment, education and income. In all categories of socio-demographic variables, women showed lower level of health status compared to that of men. In regard to social network, old women had smaller size, lower density, weaker interaction strength of social network than men. Old women mainly met with same sex, had lower frequency of contact with social network members and received more social support from family members(and relatives) than older men. In term of the social network factors affecting rural elderly`s health, social support from friends and intensity of social network were significant for both older women and older men. In addition, for older women, contact and homogeneity had statistically signifiant impact on their health. Policy and practice implications for improving health of rural elderly were suggested based on the comparative analysis.
